Yellow-headed Blackbird
This week - the end of April - saw the return of the Yellow-headed blackbirds to my neighbourhood. They arrive long after the return of the red-breasted blackbirds. We have a marsh nearby, filled with cattails, which is where they nest every year.
One of my bird books compares their harsh song to that of the robot R2D2, in the Star Wars movies. Pretty apt description, as there really isn't anything musical about their harsh call. But the males are so handsome, that it's easy to forgive them for their bizarre song.
Happy Birding!
