Yellow and red pigeon sized bird

Puyallup, Washington- pigeon-sized bird with bright yellow body and vivid red feathers surrounding the face and on the throat. It also has longish tail feathers, not parrot or macaw-like but rounded. There were two of these birds in the fife heights area june 6th. Any ideas what they might be? I've never seen anything like them before.

Hi Linda,except for the size, what you describe sounds a lot like a Western Tanager. I found it in my book "Birds of the Puget Sound, but have never seen one myself.

    Small dusky or dark gray bird, 3 to 4 inches, with a fan shaped tail. The tail had 2 yellow triangle markings, which were about 3/4 to 1 inch each.
