who's knocking?

by Maureen
( Eastern Shore, VA)

There are some birds that make a deep, guttural, knocking sound, one calls, the other responds. We live in wet woodlands area, rural. We haven't seen them, but the sounds weren't present over winter, so assume they are birds.
