white spot above tail between wings

by Diane
(Dixon, Illinois)

I live in Illinois and I keep seeing a bird that has long legs, long thin beak, brownish grey in color with a large white spot above its tail between the wings when it flies off. I live in the country and it seems to be pecking in my pasture where in spots is sand. Any ideas on what this might be? I can't get a picture - it hasn't stayed long enough.
