Where are the birds.

In the past 6 or 7 years I have had dozens of hummingbirds in my yard and this year I only have 2 or three. I think I have seen maybe 2 males and 1 female. They are the Ruby-throated varity. There is one dominate male that sits on the fence above the feeders and runs off anything that happens to come by. He was here the last of the season last year doing the same thing and now he is back. Is this why the birds aren't coming around this year?
