When do I take in my feeders?

by Linda
(Hatch, Utah)

I live by Bryce Canyon in Utah. It is starting to get cold. I still have feeders out and some hummingbird activity. Should I take the feeders in so they will migRate? Thanks for any help. I miss them in the winter.

Yes, I miss the hummers in the winter too. Their inner clocks will tell them when it is time to migrate, and whether or not your feeders are out will make no difference. So I would leave them out as long as there are hummers around to enjoy them.
Happy Birding,
Susan

Waiting 2 weeks after final sighting
by: Anonymous

On the hummingbird migration website, they suggest to wait 2 weeks before reporting the final hummingbird for the year. I'm glad I waited because I had not seen any hummingbirds for a whole week and assumed all had migrated on but one did show up that day one week after all the others had left. If there are still hummingbirds around, I certainly want to have my feeders there for them.

Hummers all winter
by: Judy-Seattle

I discovered that the Anna's hummingbird stays all winter in our area, so I leave my feeder out. One winter was exceptionally cold for the Pacific Northwest, and the feeder would freeze every night. So I got a second feeder and would swat out the frozen one at dawn with a fresh one with warm water in it. Our pair of hummers survived that winter! It was worth the effort.

I leave mine out for the last ones migrating through the area. They still need food for their long trip.
