What kind of bird is this?

by Art
(Ludlow, MA)

We have a bird that is about 3/4 the size of a turkey that has a white head, red "beards" on either side of its beak, long thin grey neck that begins just below the head, a full body of grey feathers with a herringbone effect, short legs with the 3 toes. The wing span is about 3 feet but the bird does not take to flight. It comes around our house about 11 am and then again around 6 pm. Its call sounds like two squirrels fighting and goes on for quite a while. We are in Ludlow, Massachusetts and this bird does not seem to be indigenous of this area.
