What kind of bird is this?

(El Cajon, (Dehesa area), San Diego county, CA USA)

We have a medium sized bird that comes to our back patio every day and hides under our BBQ. Its pretty entertaining. He/she hopes around under there for hours at a time pecking or bumping into the frame of the bbq and we hear a constant tap, tap, tap sound. Its pretty funny to watch. All you can see is little feet under the bbq cover hopping around.

We have moved the bbq to see if it was trying to build a nest (when the bird is not there). But there is no evidence of nest building going on.

We are trying to figure out what kind of bird it is. We are real novices at bird watching, but are taking more interest in it over the last few months, since we moved into our new house which is in a more rural/country type setting.

We live in the eastern part of San Diego county, CA. (Dehesa area of El Cajon)

Just curious to find out what bird this is.

It is very plain. Brownish, gray in color. Althought just today I did notice as it was hopping under the bbq that there appears to be a very faint pinkish tint to the underside near where the tail starts.

It is larger than a sparrow or house finch (we have lots of those here).

I apologize for the poor quality of photos. They were taken quickly with my phone and through the sliding door screen.

If anyone knows what bird this is, we would be thrilled to know.

Thanks!

Not a Catbird NEW
by: Alexis

Thanks Brook for your comment. Unfortunately, It can't be a Catbird. When I checked the map for their range, they don't show up this far west. We are in the very southern tip of California.

I'll keep hunting until I figure it out. 😃
