what kind of bird is this

White-crowned Sparrow

Bird is about the size of a sparrow. Mostly gray with a little darker color on wing tips. On the very top of head is a white stripe, with a smaller black stripe and white stripe on each side. Sits on top of head only like a little cap. I have seen it several times in my feeders.

From your description, I would suggest it is a White-crowned Sparrow. I have uploaded a photo of one for you to compare. I like to call it, a black and white soldier cap that is on his head. A very handsome member of the sparrow tribe.
