What kind of bird in Riverside CA

by Bill
(Riverside, CA)

Found this fledgling (?) in the middle of the walkway. No obvious nest. Picture doesn't show it well, but it has yellowish down, reddish-brown beak with black tip, and is about the size of a baseball. Common local birds are mockingbird, oriole, dove, house & yellow finch (not a finchy beak), house sparrows, crows, and some kind of hawk. Any idea what it is? Thanks.
