What kind of bird did I see today in Austin, Texas?

by Carol Kelbell
(Austin, Texas USA)

This bird was sitting in the rain on a fence along the road, just west of Austin, TX. He was big--about 10 inches tall. He had a speckled yellowish breast. I could not get close enough to see if he had owl features. Chuck-Will's-widows are heard in this area during the evening hours, but they are rarely out in the open to be seen. I wish I had had time to get a picture before he flew away to a tree.

i think the bird you saw was a merlin or pigeon hawk.

i had a red shouldered hawk sitting on some gray plastic shelves in my backyard during the rain, he sat there for about an hour, then the rain got harder, and all of a sudden it swooped and picked up a lizard that probably got flooded where it was hiding.
