Large bird seen from vehicle in South Dakota NEW
by: Joanne

Seen while on the interstate in a flyway for birds in South Dakota - this bird had a very large wingspan (in excess of 6-8' I believe hard to tell as all feathers were extended for landing). Seen from below, body and neck were snowy white or very light cream color. Underside of wings and tail and what I could see of the upper was a beautiful medium mottled golden brown. The bird was in process of landing on a telephone pole. I would estimate the size of the bird as equal or greater than that of a hawk. The coloring and patterning reminded me of an owl but I've never heard of nor seen an owl that large. I cannot find anything like this on bird sites...not from below anyway and wonder if climate change brought this bird here out of its normal pathway.

what kind of bird is this? NEW
by: Brook

It's a West African Crowned crane, if you didn't see it in the zoo you need to report it them immediately. A bird like this needs specific care and habitat or it will die.
