What is this bird?

Seen in central maine 5/8/15 a pair of adult birds one markedly larger than the other both had narrow & pointy black beaks with tan brown heads backs & wings, white bellies & around necks possibly had thin black outline where brown & white met. Any idea what could it be? Thanks

Knowing the size it very important. It sounds like it would be a species of woodpecker but if the size were known we would have a chance for a better guess

Can you give us an idea of the size of these birds as compared to a finch or robin or crow? That would help us make a better guess. Thanks.
