what is this bird


Southern Michigan, mid February. some kind of finch. Some of them have slightly yellowish head.

Your little bird is an American Gold Finch. As it comes closer to nesting season the male will show a bright canary yellow and his lady will have a light greenish hue. They love thistle seed!

Thanks for your replies! What threw me was there were no yellow ones. I didn't know that males lost their color in winter and I thought they all migrated south in winter.

I am pretty sure that it is a Goldfinch in its winter plumage. They will be more yellow in the warmer months.
