Was it really a grosbeak? Southcentral NC

by Kathy M. Jones

This is the very first time I've seen this bird. I have searched all morning to identify this bird. His description SOUNDS like a grosbeak but his red is NOT in a triangular shape. It's a pretty red, not rose, that covers approx. the top 3rd of his neck. The bottom 2 3rds is a stiking white. His call was pretty but very short. So, is this really a grosbeak? As I said, all the photos show the triangular area.
