Very small earthy browncolored bird also some have balck and white speckled chestst

On a cold (for So. Cal) day with a little rain in mid November i spotted three very small birds that were the shape and size of the captive finches you see in stores? Two were an earthy reddy brown all over but one was an earthy reddy brown on his head, back and wings but had a speckled chest either brown and white or black and white. It was too small for a thrush but I couldn't find it in my bird books. Any idea what it might be?


The closest I found was a winter wren but the pictures weren't 100% convincing.
