It was walking on my patio bricks, medium size, tan front with a distinctive black ring around his neck that extended deeper like a large medallion type crest on his breast. He reminded me of a woodpecker and had the flat feathered look and coloring of a dove. Any ideas. He flew away as I was getting my binoculars and I lost sight of him.

Hi Veronica, it's not much to go on but it sounds like it could possible be a flicker. They are similar to a wood pecker but they eat ants and sometimes suet. They can sounds like they are laughing, "ha ha ha ha". The Northern Flicker has a golden colored chest with a black bib and small black specks on his breast, he has a red mark on his head.google Northern Flicker
