Unknown bird

(Keokuk Iowa usa)

I had a bird that was feeding under my bird feeder. It only came one time.it's tan and black with a blue beak. It size is about a size of a sparrow. I searched several websites and the conservation office came up to a dead end.
Nobody can tell me what it is. Some say it's a cowbird but I don't think so due to the color and it has a blue beak.

Thanks for trying to identify my bird.a friend ask me to see the picture and said it was a Gros beak. He showed me a black head Gros beak that was molting on his computer. If I read it right they are from Western North America. Again thank you very much for your help. Really appreciate it.

Hi Larry,

I can't find your bird either but it's bill is like a Grosbeak, Cardinal, or a finch. However, none of these birds in Iowa have a neck ring like the one in the pic looks like it has. Your bird doesn't have any bars on it's wings either. It does look like it could be an immature bird and it may not have all of it's feathers or coloring in fully.

I'm guessing that beings you haven't seen another one, it must have been migrating South and got lost from it's flock. You can always send the pic to your nearest Audubon Society too.

I'm sorry we can't ID your bird for you,
Keep your eye out for migrating birds.
