Unknown bird

One summer day a bird landed in the tree outside my window. At first I thought it had a piece of apple in its beak, then I realized the red I saw was actually quite a large crest. It looked much like a ruffle shape and looked solid, not like feathers. The bird itself was grey, about the size of a pigeon. Any idea what this could be? I've checked all kinds of bird books, but couldn't find it. I thought perhaps it was an exotic bird that escaped from the zoo that's about 20 miles from where I live. Would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks, but this definitely was not a woodpecker. A pileated woodpecker also landed in the same tree, but this was completely different.

Hi Ginny. Your description made me think of a Pileated Woodpecker. They are large and weird looking.
