My mother in law saw this bird in her backyard in Victoria BC Canada. It caused all the smaller species to flee, so perhaps it is a bird of prey?

Hawks???

There are so many different kinds of Hawks. But the way this one is sitting, very broad in front, it really could be a Hawk. I would go on the internet and type in Hawks of Canada and see if that is what this one could be.
