Turkey sized black bird

While walking the dog on the edge of Exmoor, UK just seen a large black bird, with long neck and long legs, which when startled by the dog ran away. No attempt to fly. About turkey size, black but a lighter coloured head. No idea what it was. Any ideas?

Based on your description, it sounds like it looks like a turkey, has long legs and walks like a turkey makes me believe that is what it was.

We have wild turkeys that roam near bluffs and wooded hillsides here in the U.S. that have dark body color and have lighter gray coloring near their head.

They also have longer legs and often can be seen near roadsides and wooded edges browsing for food. I notice they are also common to areas of the UK.
