Small dusky or dark gray bird, 3 to 4 inches, with a fan shaped tail. The tail had 2 yellow triangle markings, which were about 3/4 to 1 inch each.

tom, i read at least 40 pgs in my field guide and could find only 3 birds with yellow only on thier tail, not anywhere else, 2 wax wings and a pine sisken. this is from my western fieldguide. if you could describe where you saw it and what it was doing, this may help..seashore, lake, field, backyard etc.
