The bird was spotted in Connecticut. The bird was colored a tan/gray. It had a black inverted triangle on its front and a red inverted triangle on the back of its head.

Hi Tom! The bird you saw is a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker woodpecker. In my area I mostly see the Red-shafted variety that doesn't have the red triangle on the back of its head but has a red patch on each side of the head. The next time you see it, note the bright yellow feathers on the underside of its tail and the wings when it flies.
