Tiny red and dark blue bird, Bangkok - what is it?

by Jeremy
(Thailand)

Only the back of the was visible. Seen early- to mid- morning in Bangkok, flitting and possibly hovering briefly in the foliage of a mango tree in a very quiet street near the centre of the city. Its body was about the same size as that of a goldcrest or a hummingbird, so a very few centimetres. Colours were set out along the length of the body, at least along its back (the rest of the bird was not visible). The two most visible colours were a brilliant red, and either very dark blue or black (impossible to tell which), set on the wings and back. The tree was not in flower but the bird stayed for about two or three minutes before moving on.
