Tiny blackish bird with large white spots and short gray tail.

We only see this pair of birds at night when they roost on top of a column on our front porch. West TN. We’ve never seen this type of bird before. They are so small and huddled together so closely that we couldn’t tell what kind of animal it was until we saw them fly away one evening. They have a medium to longish beak that is bent slightly. Moved VERY quickly. Could not discern any other color. We have not heard any sounds coming from them. Hope someone can identify for us.
