tiny bird with green head

by Debby
(Chandler, AZ)

I'm in the Phoenix area and I've seen it the past few springs. Last year it built a nest in my cactus. It's very small and has red on it's wings. Also has a loud song for such a small bird. Does anyone know what it is?

Green-headed Bird

Hi Debby! What a beautiful bird! Thanks to your great photo, I was able to find it in my bird book. It's called a Verdin. My books says they are common in Mesquite and other desert scrub.
