Think Woodpecker family

by Sharon Parsano

This bird was in a tree in my back yard. It was small with dark gray back and light gray belly, with small beck and walks up and down tree trunk like woodpecker. I saw the little bird twice but is seems to be gone now.

I could not get a picture because by the time I went to get one it was gone.

Nuthatch?
by: Judy-Seattle

Hi Sharon. It's difficult to say for sure, but your description sounds like a Nuthatch. There are a variety of Nuthatches, but they typically hop up and down the bark of trees. We also have them in the Pacific Northwest. They love to grab shelled peanuts from our birdfeeder.
