The Tale of the Baby Pigeon

by Liz Recco
(Long Island N.Y.)

I had to pick up a prescription at our local CVS pharmacy when I spotted a box in the front of the store. Inside was the ugliest creature. Turns out it was a baby pigeon. I'm friends with one of our local animal hospitals that will occasionally take a wild critter. So off we went and they told me what I brought to them.

Several months latter my cat needed his shots and I brought him to the vet, same place. I was curios, and asked about the bird. They said "Oh you mean Fred". They told me that they raised him and tried to set him free but he won't leave. He lives outside in the back of the building and they still feed him and some others. They got a bird bath and a few seed feeders and now have a small sanctuary.
I've done the same in my yard and have a lot of pigeons and others and to me they are beautiful. There feathers are iridescent and they stay when I feed them. I call them all Fred.
