I built this peanut vending machine. One side dispenses long peanuts and the other one has round short ones.
I made this thing to experiment with the blue jays because they seem to find peanuts first. I noticed them trying to get 3 big peanuts into there mouths at my front window. They would try several different size peanuts but would try to get 3 of the big long ones.
The trouble I had was that it has rained several times a day for the last 6 weeks and the peanuts got wet in the tube and swelled up and got stuck. Thus the wooden dowel was also swelling, making it difficult to pull the dowels out.
Part one is the set up to get them accustomed to the working of the machine. However to my surprise the grackles have made the best effort at the dowels and I suspect the grackles will be the first to really operate the machine. I made it from scrap wood and a clear plastic tube. My wife hates it and i have to put it out when she is not here.
We moved last year from Nashville to 20 miles west of the city. Was delighted to have 3 rose breasted grosbeaks at our feeder the other day (Apr 20, 2018)
