swallow type bird

(Nanaimo, Canada)

We have these birds flying around lately. They look much like a big swallow, grey in color with a white stripe under the wing going from the front of the wing to the back. Pretty sure they must be 9-12 inch wingspan. Sorry no pic they are too high up. Any ideas. We are on the west coast Canada.

Re: - to "Anonymous" - check on line for "Common Night Hawk". Sounds like that may be the bird you are seeing. They are beautiful!

We have a few in central/southern Illinois. We think it's a northern mockingbird but we're not sure.

I've done some more searching and from what I can see, they are probably "common night hawks". I was quite surprised by this but everything I'm finding seems to point me in this direction.

Bird ID, KY

Checking on the cows tonight at dusk and saw about 20 swallow type birds with a white stripe on the underside of the wings from front to back. Anybody know what these are? Large wing span, maybe 10 inches.

I've been wondering what this bird is as well (white bar under wing, swallow-like behaviors.). I live in the Cowichan Valley and this is the 2nd year I've noticed them flying in the evening - I assume fly catching. If anyone knows what they are, please reply. I will check out the Common \Night \hawk - might be that.

Common Nighthawk, Probably
by: Rooty

I live in southeast Wisconsin on Lake Michigan and have been seeing these for the last month or so for the first time. They always appear at dusk and there might be 20-30 I can see at a time. The white bar under the wings is very distinctive.
