Sunflower leaf eating birds

We have several sunflowers in our backyard. Everyday four or more small white breasted dark gray backed birds come and feast on the leaves of the plants. What kind of birds are they? We do not have a picture, sorry.

Hi, have these birds been with you all summer or do you think they are migrating South? Can you compare their size to that of a Robin? Is there anything else you can think of telling us that might help?
