A very large hawk perched on a low tree branch in our tiny back yard in Toronto......it was huge, about 24 inches tall with a smallish head.....it could have been a red -tailed hawk except that is was grey......very pale....almost like a ghost! It was about 5 feet away so we got a clear look....it stared at us for a least 5 minutes before it flew away! We were standing in the garage so we couldn't check out the wingspan.....I have never seen such a big hawk! Anybody know what I saw?

Thanks again Jill....it does sound like a Cooper's hawk, but they are the size of a crow.....this was a giant bird.......very spooky, looked right at us as if it was sizing us up for lunch!

Large hawk NEW

Hi Jill........I would agree with you...Coopers hawks are the right color........as are some goshawks.....but this bird was huge...at least two feet high......and the coopers and goshawks are medium sized hawks! It could be a sub of the red-tailed hawks...apparently they have several subs that can have different colors........or it might just be a really big Cooper's hawk........this bird was twice the size of a gull!! What do you think?
