squirrels HELP

by Joy

I have been happily watching & feeding birds for years. I feed the black sunflower seed & suet & thistle seed. This summer the squirrels have just taken over. Is there any feeder that anyone has used that is truly helpful in keeping them away? I know there are small circular ones that keep them away but I want a larger feeder for birds like cardinals. Thanks. Indianapolis.

hi, yes the little rascals can be quite demanding!

You can buy Squirrel Baffles which are a disk shape dome that goes over the top of the feeder, they also keep the rain out and the squirrel will just slide off the top of it. But you might still have to be inventive and not hang the feeder near anything. I bought an 8 ft Shepherd's Hook for two feeders and put it far from tree or house. I hung a small feeder with a baffle over the top of it and it is quite amusing to watch the little critter's antics as they try to solve the problem of how to get to the food. The problem with this is that if they can possibly accomplish the feat they will never give up no matter what you try so I shouldn't be encouraging their efforts! I own a feeder called a "Squirrel Buster" that works great too.

Home made Squirrel baffle:

You might try buying a metal 4 or 6 inch circular section of furnace or stove pipe that pinches together around your smaller diameter bird feeder pole or post. You can also spray paint them to match your feeder if you prefer.

When this larger diameter circular vent or section of stove pipe is put around the smaller pole and pinched together the squirrels can't get their legs around the larger pipe to climb up onto your feeder.

Also make sure that the feeder isn't close to hanging tree branches etc. so squirrels can't jump onto your feeder from nearby trees.
