Spotted chest bird

by Susan
(Seattle, WA, USA)

Black spots on White chest. grey head with faint orangeish brown around eyes and on wing tips and underside of wings, almost red. Was seen on our Cedar tree, eating bugs, perhaps. Clinging on to tree with rather large claws. Had long slender beak. Saw climb down the tree and pick at other areas on tree. Large plump bird, we first thought was pigeon. Live in Seattle. Have always lived here but never seen this bird.

Flicker? NEW
by: Judy-Seattle

Susan, your description sounds like a Nothern Flicker woodpecker. I saw one in my backyard the other day.
