Southern Ontario White Belly Bird

Hi everyone.

I recently moved to a new area that has a nice park and little pond and marsh area. On my walks I have come across several of these birds and after all my searching have no idea what it is. I will try to get a picture bit here is what I know:

-pure white under belly
- roughly the size of a mourning dove
- has a black collar around its neck
- looks to have swallow like wings in flight
-makes an awful squaking sound
- has spindly legs that are much longer than others for a bird of that size (not similar in legs to the mourning dove)
- not sure what the feet looked like but it did move quick when it walked
- it's other colours are tan or brown on his back

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Killdeer
by: Judy -Seattle

Your desctiption sounds like a Killdeer. They live near water and make their nest out of pebbles on the ground. If you approach the nesting area, they will try to distract you away with their broken wing act.
