Smallish brown bird that appears to hover.

I saw this interesting bird in our yard today. It is smaller than a Robin and larger than a Finch. It is brownish in color but seems to have a slightly reddish tint in the sunlight. Its tail seems somewhat long as well. It was moving about the yard by moving about 2 to 3 feet and then hovering about 18 inches above the ground. When it would see something to eat it just drops down and gets it. Then it flies back up to about 18 inches and hovers again. We have several feeders out but have yet to see it land on one. It does fly up to a low branch to rest I would guess or maybe enjoy its meal. We live in south central Minnesota. Maybe it is just passing through. Any idea what they may be?
