Small Brown Owl

We have small owls in our back yard. They are brown, probably 8-12" tall, and are living in the palm tree where the dead leaves hang down, they come out around sunset and search for food. It's hard to see if there are any markings or any other colors on them because the sun starts going down when they come out. I think these may be babies, becasue we have seen more than 2 of them at a time, and it looks like one is a little larger. We live in the Sacramento, CA area.

Any idea what type of owls these might be?

We live in Citrus Heights, CA and have also been seeing these small brown owls. We have 4 at a time hang out on the power wires in our backyard. Your story is exactly the same as ours.
We have no idea what kind they are either. I hope somebody does.
