Similar to a red-winged blackbird

by Jean
(Racine, Wisconsin)

We saw a bird about the size of a red-winged blackbird at the feeder. Instead of the red and yellow should/wing patch of a male, this bird had a distinct tan band about a quarter of the way down the wing. No clues as to which bird it is. Bird coloring was dark brown/black.

I looked up the cowbird. Unless this bird has a distinctly tan horizontal bar just past the shoulder, it's not the bird. Haven't seen it since either.

Maybe shiny cowbird or common gackle. Look them up and compare. Let us know after you identify! Good luck!

How did it compare to...

How did it compare to a Brown Headed Cowbird or a Bronzed Cowbird. I'm confused about the brown and black coloring. Did you notice its eye color or beak color/shape? Sounds intriguing!
