similar to a red bellied woodpecker

Well I just saw a bird twice in the last two hours or so that is not in any of my guides. It looked a lot like a Red Bellied Woodpecker . . . but it was the size of a cardinal. The head was more orange than red. Could it have been an immature Red Bellied Woodpecker? It seems much to early in the season for it to be an immature but that is all I can come up with.

If it helps I live in the Washington DC area.
