SE NC grayish bird

Never saw the bird before. It was in our yard pecking at the ground or at Bkack Gum seeds on the ground. I couldn't see it take off. Plump bird, about 8" or so, grayish feathers, which might have some light tan inner mixed. The breast is definitely a dull white and not gray. The funny part is that it had a long beak, maybe an inch and a quarter. We live in the country with farm fields around us, lots of tall trees, and wet drainage ditches, creeks, ponds.
