Rita - What is this bird?

These birds hatched in an oak tree in our front yard. They are quite large, about 18 inches and about 2 weeks old. Any idea what they are?

We saw the same bird

My husband and I saw the same bird last year in our neighborhood in Oceanside. The other day I saw 2 of them in an oak tree next to a nest. I'm hoping there are eggs in that nest!!!

Rita, I believe it is a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron. My bird book says they hunt by night but are seen feeding by day.
