red mowhawk ed bird in my back yard?

by morgann
(Lincoln County troy missouri)

This bird has the loudest squawk I have ever herd. All I could see was long skinny neck and shaved head gray in color. The bird had a red mowhawk bigger than its head. It was in the wooded area in my backyard in troy missouri.

By the description you provided there is only one bird in North America that matches that description and it would be the largest woodpecker in North America the infamous Pileated Woodpecker!!

May be a pileated woodpecker. They are pretty large but I can tell you from personal experience that they have a very loud squack that they make.
