Red goose in the trees??

Remembered an old sighting from a long time ago, now wondering what the heck I saw! I grew up in central Pennsylvania in the woods. The bird I saw was about the size and shape of a Canada Goose, but definitely all dark red/rust colored plumage. The color was fairly uniform all around it. I was running through the woods (chasing after my dog because he had gotten loose) and happened upon this bird sitting in a tree. It was startled by me and took off. Wingspan of maybe 3 to 4 feet, tail was reminiscent of a red tail hawk in shape, proportionate to this bird, but it definitely had a much longer neck.

Not a lot of big water sources nearby, save for the Susquehanna a few miles east of where I was. Again, looked like the shape of a goose, but was just hanging out in the trees. Any idea? Wish I had a photo!

It is grey with a long beak and a white ring around it's neck. The bird is about the size of a dove and I live in Florida near the Georgia line.
