Red Bellied Woodpecker recovers

by Karri
(Virginia)

Someone brought me a Red-bellied last week. (I work at a vets office)

He has a broken wing but is progressing nicely. Such a beautiful creature. I have enjoyed the rehabilitation!

Comment
Karri, it's nice to know you can take an injured bird to a veterinarian.

I have a red bellied injured woodpecker that I found this evening. There have been a few around the past few days. Found this one at dusk tonight hopping and falling 2x from a dogwood tree. It is a male and it's missing its right eye, I was able to get quite close (because it couldn't see me) but it was out of reach. I know a song bird rehabilitator close to me, but still need to catch it, and unsure how other than baseball glove w/ towel? I have a box w/ water and raisins and dogwood berries ready - can anyone help with catch options. The squirrels are trying to get to him??

A small woodpecker flew into our window and I heard the thud and then saw it stuck in an azalea bush directly below..it finally got to the ground and tried to flutter it's wings but won't fly...as we have cats going outside I put it in a basin with a litter liner...it is awake and moves but will not fly off...I am afriad it is injured that it cannot fly...I am hoping it will make it thru the night and I will try to put it outside...perhaps the female will come for it? or be adopted? it's very sad
