Red bellied woodpecker in camp Douglas,wi

(Camp Douglas,wi)

I have been bird watching through my kitchen window for about a year now, today is the first time that I have seen him. Camera battery is charging so I plan to get a snap shot of him the next time he visits.

He was interested in the suet that I have handing in my peach tree( yes, you can grow peaches in Wisconsin). Just hope he doesn't decide to peck holes in my tree, I see the downy woodpeckers have been pecking around as if thinking about their plans for the spring.

Cool and do not panic!

We get loads of tree clingers/woodpeckers in our backyard. I have only rarely see holes more than about 5 mm in diameter in *live* trees. The point is that the woodpeckers usually go after dead/dying trees/branches. If you peach tree is otherwise healthy I would not worry.

It is most likely that the downy is going after small bugs or grubs more than looking for a place to nest.

Please post a pic when you can get one!
