Pileated woodpeckers in Branford, CT

by P
(Branford, CT)

Last year we had a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers come and make their home in a dead tree in our back yard. We were so excited to see them for its pretty rare where we live.

We watched them all summer. One day I was out feeding our chickens and some chips of wood came flying down on my head, and come to find out it was the woodpeckers digging out their whole. They had 2 baby's and it was amazing to see their little heads pop out of whole.

In the fall they left. Now its spring and we think we saw them again, but we're not too sure. We really hope they come back, they are beautiful birds to watch and they really are amazing.

Hi,
If you keep feeding the suet all year long you might keep them. I have 2 pairs and they feed 4 or 5 times a day every day on suet feeder.
