Owl or Hawk?

The bird landed on my balcony in the city of Toronto mid-afternoon. It is approx 1 + 1/2 feet high, brown & tan colouring, hooked beak, and huge wing span. Is this an owl or a hawk. He/She was breathtaking. No pictures. Couldn't move.

I agree that it's probably a hawk. It's most likely a Red-tailed hawk. I'll post a photo of a Red-tailed hawk that was in a tree in our yard.
