Nuthatch variant??

general size and shape of nuthatch. white face, throat and underbelly. back, wings and tail top black with slight white hints. outside tail border shows white in flight. tail is short. has black Mohawk stripe down center of head top. vivid, large black eye...thought it was white breasted nuthatch at first but absolutely no gray or blue anywhere....just black and white. that Mohawk stripe is about 1/2" wide. been looking at backyard birds for 50 years and never seen anything like this one....Sacramento California on a bird bath for 12 seconds or so. no time for picture.
