Nocturnal green bird

by Sue
(East Yorkshire)

Sunday evening - about 11pm, my husband and I heard some birds making a loud whooping noise in the trees near our house in rural East Yorkshire. They sounded like monkeys in the jungle! Today, around 6.30 pm, my husband saw four large (about the size of a jay) green birds with yellow backs flying in the trees making the same noise. We've checked our RSPB book of British birds but can't seem to match them. No pics I'm afraid - any ideas?

Is my guess too. The night-time incident might have been sparked by a predator approaching the nest, cat or something. Woodpecker calls are like monkey calls when i think of it, like mocking laughter also.
