new to bird watching

I have been observing a large dark bird. They come in the morning, several, 10 of them. They hang in my tree, outside my back door. They have a 5' to 6' wing span. they are dark. They have a dark beak, slight reddish above it. They live in Wisconsin, near water, never seen them dive in. I did let my dogs out, no choice (morning business), they did not attack.
